I’m looking for a reading comprehension and writing tutor for my two kids (5th and 7th grade). We’re focused on building skills in reading fluency, complex letter combinations (reading/spelling), comprehension, and writing structure (paragraphs, short essays)—not just homework help.

I am looking for a tutor for my 8 year old son. He needs help with reading and writing. We live in Midwood, Brooklyn and looking for a tutor who can work with him in person in public library.
- Posted by Vazira,
My son is a homeschooled 3rd grader who has been accepted to the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth and is enrolled in the AoPS Honor Language Arts program. His reading does not need support — it is his strongest area. What he needs is a skilled writing coach who can develop his craft.
What he needs craft instruction in:
• Sentence structure and boundaries — he writes in long run-on sentences
• Paragraph organization — he doesn't yet use paragraph breaks to signal scene or topic changes
• Dialogue punctuation and formatting — he attempts quotation marks but placement is inconsistent
• Syntax variety — most of his sentences follow the same He said / They went pattern
• Revision as a discipline — learning to re-read, rethink, and improve his own drafts
What we are NOT looking for:
• Worksheets or grammar drills
• Test prep or standardized writing formulas
• Reading instruction (he reads at the 91st percentile — reading is not the need)
• Someone who will correct his work FOR him rather than teach him to self-edit
The ideal tutor is someone who:
• Is a published writer (fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, children's literature, journalism) OR holds an MFA or equivalent advanced training in writing craft
• Has experience coaching young or gifted writers — not just teaching English
• Understands the writing workshop model: mentor texts, revision conferences, craft study
• Will work from his OWN writing as the primary instructional text — taking his stories and poems and tea
